Warehousing in the Netherlands allows faster, lower-cost delivery to EU customers compared to shipping directly from the UK. Post-Brexit, shipping from the UK involves customs delays, duties, and VAT complications. An EU-based warehouse treats intra-EU shipments as domestic, reducing friction and improving customer experience with quicker delivery times.
Yes. Actually, a VAT registration is required in each EU country where you stock goods, as it creates a "fixed establishment" for VAT purposes. Your fulfilment partner can often act as a fiscal representative or help with this. Once registered, you can use the EU One-Stop Shop (OSS) scheme to report and pay VAT on consumer (B2C) sales across multiple EU countries via a single return, avoiding individual registrations in every destination country.
You will need to register for the OSS (One-Stop Shop) scheme to sell directly to EU consumers, the other alternative is to register for VAT in each EU member country you sell in, a vastly more expensive exercise!
One OSS EU registration covers VAT compliance in all 27 EU member counties and Northern Ireland. And you'll be happy to know that there are no thresholds for third counties selling via OSS.
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is required for customs procedures when moving goods into the EU. As a foreign business, you need an EU EORI (e.g., starting with NL for the Netherlands) for importing stock into the EU warehouse and handling EU customs.
Without an EORI number, your goods will likely be held by customs, resulting in significant delays and potential storage fees.
The EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), effective since December 2024, ensures all consumer products sold in the EU are safe. It applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors, and fulfilment service providers.
Key requirements include:
Appointing a "Responsible Person" (economic operator) established in the EU or Northern Ireland for each product.
Providing manufacturer details, product safety information, and contact details on listings.
Keeping documentation for traceability and cooperating with authorities.
As a foreign-based seller, you can appoint EUify as an authorised representative.
Without GPSR compliance, you risk being removed from EU marketplace platforms like Amazon, Etsy or eBay. You also risk losing wholesale (B2B) sales from EU companies who would risk fines and penalties for taking on non-compliant liabilities.
